Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team

A global community of mappers using open map data to support disaster response, public health, and climate resilience.

Volunteers map remotely, tracing buildings, roads, and other features for regions where better maps help communities and aid organizations, through HOT's Tasking Manager.

I first heard about Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team during my time at Via. We hosted a "map-a-thon," where coworkers got together to review satellite imagery of villages that recently experienced a natural disaster requiring humanitarian aid. We reviewed imagery to identify building footprints to assist with landscape understanding, emergency response efforts, and relocation resources.

Since then, I have enjoyed being able to pitch in where I can, growing my skills with open-source GIS mapping and contributing to various projects across the world.
